A red-tailed hawk is one of the most common hawks in North America. You have probably seen these birds of prey on your daily drives in trees and on power lines overlooking fields and road banks looking for their next meal.
Falconry is a federal regulated sport. All birds of prey are protected in North America. To become a falconer you must pass an exam, have a mew inspected by your local representative, maintain an active hunting license and apprentice under a General Falconer (or higher) for 2 years.
Falconers trap juvenile (less than 1 year old) Red-Tailed hawks from the wild to practice falconry. In the wild, red-tailed hawks have a 5% survival rate in their first year. When trapped for falconry, their chance of survival increases to 95%.
